Week 4 – Schools Activities
So activities with the Children Group and Adults Group are
officially underway. So why not throw ourselves a curve ball and partner up
with a public boarding school for a week of completely unique workshops
tailored to the needs and preferences of hundreds of young adults to be
developed completely by us, and to be facilitated and delivered in the evening
after a long day at work? We are adaptable, professional and hardworking after
all so this isn’t an issue for us!
On the Monday we ran a HIV/Aids Awareness seminar. We showed
an episode of ‘Shuga’ which is a Kenyan show which focuses on the stigmatising
attitudes of HIV prevalence. We then led a discussion around how to treat
people who are affected by HIV, how to prevent HIV contraction and encouraging
people to get tested for HIV.
The second evening we ran a workshop on ‘Loving
Relationships’. The young adults were split into sub groups of; consent, abuse,
sex, equality and self-awareness where they were given thought provoking
questions surrounding these topics. The students were then asked to present
their answers which was very successful and insightful.
On the third evening we facilitated a debate with the debate
club around drug abuse and the statements were; only poor people abuse drugs
and it’s easy to quit. The debaters had very knowledgeable and experienced in
public speaking which made the experience enjoyable for the participants and
the volunteers alike.
The last workshop we conducted was a Careers Day on the
Thursday evening. This activity focussed on topics such as; role models,
academic roots, CV writing, work experience, motivational videos and a general
discussion after each topic.
The participants involved described this workshop as
inspiring and fun. The volunteers felt that everyone was very engaged in all
workshops and the head of discipline of the school was very happy with the
content and how the workshops were delivered. The future legacy of
International Service’s involvement with AMU would benefit hugely from
continuing this partnership with the school. We would happily run weekly
activities with these young adults within the school grounds if the schools
hadn’t broken up for holidays and gone home.
Stay tuned for week 5…
